HVACIncreased efficiency in cooling helps reduce peak demand

Vol. 1 - December, 2008

Sempra Energy endowment to UC Davis supports energy efficiency programs and Dr. Mark Modera is selected as Sempra Energy Distinguished Scholar
The Energy Efficiency Center announced the generous gift at a reception held in December at Sempra Energy headquarters. Funds will continue the EEC's work in lighting and agriculture as well as cooling initiatives of the Western Cooling Efficiency Center.

West Sacramento Wal-Mart installs dual loop lighting system
The new lighting technology developed by Theresa Pistochini and Konstantinos Papamichael of the UC Davis California Lighting Technology Center measures the light inside the store as well as what is transmitted through a skylight, resulting in a consistent light level while subtly dimming the lights when they are not needed, thus, reducing the amount of electricity consumed.

The Roots of Energy Efficiency: How California Changed the Way the World Uses Energy
Held October 14 as the first of three fora convened by the Energy Efficiency Center in partnership with Chevron exploring California's rich history as an innovator of technologies and policies that promote the efficient use of energy. The second forum entitled "Innovations in Energy Efficiency: How California Changed the Spectrum and the Debate" will be held April 22.

PG&E and Edison International Energy Efficiency Fellows for 2008-09 announced: our Emerging Venture Analysts are at the heart of what we do!
These business and engineering graduate and upper division undergraduate students are funded by the Energy Efficiency Center to assist later-stage researchers in developing and designing innovative energy-efficient technologies and bringing these technologies to market. Internship programs and fellowships are offered annually. In the three years since the EEC's inception, our EVAs have done extraordinary things. All of our alumni have found jobs working within industry, government, academia and the private sector.

Two Billion Cars: Driving Toward Sustainability
by Daniel Sperling and Deborah Gordon
Forward by Arnold Schwarzenegger

Transportation experts Daniel Sperling and Deborah Gordon provide a concise history of America's love affair with cars and an overview of the global oil and auto industries. America is still the leading emissions culprit, and what is especially worrying is that developing nations are becoming car-centric cultures as well. The authors explain how we arrived in this dangerous state, and also what we can do about it.

The Green Technology Entrepreneurship Academy (July 6-10 at Tahoe Research Center) accepting applications Jan 5th
The Academy is a one week program for science and engineering PhD students, postdocs, and research faculty working in green technology who want to explore the potential for developing and bringing to market new ventures in green technology. It is organized by the UC Davis Center for Entrepreneurship and sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation, Pacific Gas and Electric and Chevron Technology Ventures. Applicants working in research in energy efficiency are highly encouraged to apply.

"Smart Lighting" installed in north entry lot and top level Mondavi parking garage at UC Davis
The UC Davis California Lighting Technology Center has been working with industry partners to develop prototypes that integrate bi-level lighting controls on metal halide, fluorescent, and LED fixtures. The “Smart Lighting” technology allows a lower level of light to be maintained during periods of zero occupancy. Occupancy sensors switch lights to full capacity upon detection of someone entering the structure or parking lot. The bi-level control will enhance security as well as reduce energy consumption by approximately 50%.

Cree Edwards, CEO of eMeter will speak at UC Davis on January 8
eMeter is the leading global provider of enterprise software for managing large-scale, real-time smart meter systems. Mr. Edwards serves on the Board of Advisors for the Energy Efficiency Center.

Western Cooling Challenge heats up
On June 5, UC Davis launched a new partnership program designed to reduce rooftop air conditioner electricity use in the western United States by over 40 percent. The “Western Cooling Challenge,” being spearheaded by the UC Davis Western Cooling Efficiency Center, targets large retailers and manufacturers. Since October, a number of equipment suppliers have signed on, including Trane, Aaon, and Munters.
