Business Development
UC Davis Center for Entrepreneurship (C4E) serves as the nexus for entrepreneurship, education, and research—and as a springboard for entrepreneurial initiatives on the UC Davis campus. The Center's education mission is to provide students with business, science, and engineering backgrounds with the necessary skills, resources, and network support to turn their ideas into action. Through business development intensives, an entrepreneurship academy, and business development certification program, the C4E brings together science, engineering, and business students with faculty and experienced entrepreneurs, investors, and corporate leaders to create an environment that blends effective theory with hands-on participation and solution-driven innovation.
- The Business Development Certificate Program provides an introduction to and hands-on experience in developing new business ventures designed to commercialize research. Students take courses in technology management, innovation and entrepreneurship and participate in interdisciplinary practicums alongside MBA students and under the guidance of GSM faculty, investors and entrepreneurs.
- The Business Development Intensive is a one-week workshop on innovation and entrepreneurship designed for PhD-level (advanced to candidacy) students and post-docs. The objective of this five-day immersive workshop is to increase the knowledge and skill base of research scientists and engineers regarding technology commercialization and new business development. Participants will learn about navigating intellectual property and technology transfer, developing and validating potential opportunities for commercialization and integrating scientific research and entrepreneurship. Through a combination of lectures, exercises, and team projects, participants will gain the ability to recognize, develop, and communicate potential commercial opportunities arising from their own research and to tap into the social networks linking them to the entrepreneurial community on the UC Davis campus.
- The Green Technology Entrepreneurship Academy is a one-week workshop on innovation and entrepreneurship for science and engineering doctoral students, post-docs, and research faculty who will spend the time learning to recognize, develop, and bring to market green businesses built on their research. The five-day immersive program provides students with focused lectures, practical exercises, and hands-on experiences turning their science into viable business ventures. Throughout the week, students interact with Academy faculty, investors, entrepreneurs, and industry executives to understand the path from laboratory to market, and the resources that are available along the way.
Energy Systems and Resource Management
UC Davis Extension offers a number of programs and courses that incorporate energy efficiency within the curriculum. These programs and courses are geared for the professional engineer, construction planner or designer, facility or plant manager, energy analyst, architect, agency manager, or others who wish to expand their expertise in this critical area.
The Certificate Program in Energy Resource Management is a completely online certificate program which addresses the entire range of issues involved in understanding and managing energy in any industry, from heavy to light energy users. The six courses of the program provide the information you need to distinguish yourself as an expert in the energy resource management field. The curriculum of this program aligns with the Association of Energy Engineers requirements for CEM and BEP certifications. This program has also been recognized by the California Energy Commission.
- The Green Building and Sustainable Design Certificate Program addresses the trend of developing healthier communities through sustainable design by defining effective ways to utilize energy and water usage. The program combines elements from architecture, civil engineering, landscape architecture, environmental and land use planning, and construction management. You will develop successful strategies for implementation of green building and sustainable design into site planning and design, building design and construction, and building management practices. Started as a joint program between two of UC Davis Extension's most successful programs, the certificate program is now housed within the Land Use and Natural Resources (LUNR) department. From land use planning and water resources to green building and sustainable design, the LUNR department is committed to creating innovative and responsible courses, programs and conferences.
Lighting and Design
UC Davis California Lighting & Technology Center (CLTC) offers educational and professional resources directed to architects, designers, and those involved with building operation and specification processes. Professional courses offered through CLTC are the Daylighting Academy, and the Advanced Interior Lighting Seminar. CLTC also has published Title 24 Residential Lighting Design Guide, as a resource to help the building community understand the revised residential lighting requirements (2005) and to help in integrating these changes into new and retrofit home plans.
