The Roots of Energy Efficiency: How California Changed the Way the World Uses Energy (Oct 14, 2008)

Art Rosenfeld and Ralph Cavanagh Presenting at Roots ForumThirty years ago, California “invented” a collection of technologies and policies to raise the energy efficiency of its buildings, appliances and cars. Now, California faces a tremendous challenge: reducing carbon emissions while maintaining a vigorous economy. Can the Golden State pull it off? It pays to look back at a similar challenge for guidance, inspiration and mistakes to avoid.

On October 14, 2008, the EEC in partnership with Chevron, convened a group of speakers intimately involved with those early innovations. Physicists to politicians, they were asked to recall and reflect on their actions. Today’s decision-makers in government, industry, and other sectors commented on these "lessons learned" and how they might be applied to reducing carbon emissions. This was the first of three fora that the EEC, in partnership with Chevron, will present. For an overview of the program, please click here.

Video of the October 14th session is now available for viewing and will be aired on UC TV (December 15, 22, & 29).
